June 20, 2025 (Friday)
11th Week in Ordinary Time
Psalter: Week 3 / (Green)
Ps 34:2-3, 4-5, 6-7
From all their distress God rescues the just.
1st Reading: 2 Corinthians 11:18, 21-30
Gospel: Matthew 6:19-23
Do not store up treasures for yourself here, on earth, where moth and rust destroy it; and where thieves can steal it. Store up treasures for yourself with God, where no moth or rust can destroy it, nor thief come and steal it. For where your treasures is, there, also, will your heart be. The lamp of the body is the eye; if your eyes are sound, your whole body will be full of light. If your eyes are diseased, your whole body will be full of darkness. If, then, the light in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!
Reflection:
“Christ is the ultimate treasure.”
I was once sitting next to a merchant banker at a barbecue. He said he couldn’t understand my vocation. He thought being a priest was a waste of time and talent, since he thought I could have got a high paid job in the city and made lots of money instead. I don’t think he would have understood Saint Paul’s vocation either. In today’s reading Paul lists all his sufferings on account of the Good News. It’s a frightening list which is probably beyond the endurance of most people.
As such, it is hard to understand, unless we recognize how precious the Good News of Salvation through Jesus Christ is to Paul. It’s so precious that he is willing to pour out his last ounce of energy, and his last drop of blood so that he can reach as many people as possible with Christ’s saving word. “For where your treasure is, there, also, will your heart be.” Christ is the ultimate treasure that will never wear out or break or tarnish. If we have a divided heart, our commitment to Christ and the Kingdom of God will be undermined. So, what’s your greatest treasure in life?
