Ps 95:1-2, 6-7, 8-9
If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.
1st Reading: Habakkuk 1:2-3; 2:2-4
2nd Reading: 2 Timothy 1:6-8, 13-14
Gospel: Luke 17:5-10
The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith.” And the Lord said, “If you have faith, even the size of a mustard seed, you may say to this tree, ‘Be uprooted, and plant yourself in the sea!’ and it will obey you. Who among you would say to your servant, coming in from the fields after plowing or tending sheep, ‘Go ahead and have your dinner’? No, you tell him, ‘Prepare my dinner. Put on your apron, and wait on me while I eat and drink. You can eat and drink afterward.’ Do you thank this servant for doing what you told him to do? I don’t think so. And therefore, when you have done all that you have been told to do, you should say, ‘We are no more than servants; we have only done our duty.’”
Lectio Divina:
“Increase our faith.”
Read: Habakkuk’s confidence in God is challenged by God’s silence before the injustice of the people. Saint Paul encourages Timothy to let the grace of God flourish in his life and ministry. Jesus calls his disciples to be faithful servants of the Lord.
Reflect: The disciples ask Jesus, “Increase our faith.” Elsewhere, Jesus describes his disciples as men of little faith for their reluctance to believe or to understand God’s ways. Yet here Jesus helps them to realize the power of even a little faith if we really let it have an impact on our lives. We have to use God’s gift to its full potential. That’s why Saint Paul writes, “fan into a flame the gift of God you received.” The image of the flame of faith also appears in the Rite of Baptism, when the priest presents a candle and prays that “these children will keep the flame of faith alive in their hearts.” So, it’s not so much that Christ has to give us more faith. Rather by cooperating with the Spirit we let the gift of faith we have received become a more effective power in our lives.
Pray: Meditate upon the gift of faith you have received from God.
Act: “Do not be ashamed,” says Saint Paul. Do not hide your faith in public.
