Heavy rains trigger flooding in Tacloban, Bacolod

Joey A. Gabieta

TACLOBAN CITY—Classes from kindergarten to senior high school were suspended in Tacloban City on Monday, after heavy rains brought by a shear line caused widespread flooding, prompting local authorities and school officials to prioritize student safety. College-level classes, however, continued as scheduled.

The suspension followed the issuance of an orange rainfall warning, indicating intense to torrential rains capable of causing flooding and landslides.

Amid the adverse weather, seven students—three of them girls—were rescued off Barangay 102, Old Kawayan, after the small boat they were riding sank past noon.

Several low-lying areas in Tacloban City experienced flooding due to accumulated rainwater. Residents were advised to remain vigilant, especially in flood-prone and coastal zones, as the shear line continues to affect weather conditions.

In Negros Occidental, Toboso Mayor Richard Jaojoco called on Department of Public Works and Highways Secretary Vince Dizon to investigate a road project in Barangay San Isidro, which collapsed again on Jan. 31 due to heavy rains after previous repairs.

The rains and floods also triggered six landslides in Toboso, leading to the suspension of classes and a significant loss of personal belongings.

In Bacolod City and across Negros Occidental, the shear line caused flooding and landslides, forcing over 5,000 residents to evacuate since Jan. 31.
