Jumamoy dynasty in Bohol town ends

TAGBILARAN CITY—A newbie in politics ended the 39-year rule of the Jumamoy family in Inabanga town in Bohol province.
Dexter Muneses Ancla, 49, defeated incumbent Mayor Jose Jono Jumamoy in the mayoral race in the May 12 elections.
Ancla, a businessman and a new face in politics, called his winning a “liberation” and “independence.”
“For almost 40 years, Inabanga is finally free! This is because of the people. It is right and just to give what the Inabangnons rightfully deserve,” he wrote on Facebook after the canvassing.
“I feel so happy to see people happier than me. As they said, Happy Independence Day,” he added.
Ancla said his fight was not easy.
He started his campaign for “Ang Bag-ong Inabanga” (The New Inabanga) more than 18 months before the elections.
Ancla got 16,958 votes while Jumamoy obtained 12,959 votes.
Jumamoy, 38, became the youngest mayor elected in the country in 2017.
Jumamoy’s mother, incumbent Vice Mayor Josephine Socorro “Roygie” Jumamoy, also lost in the vice mayoral race to Ancla’s running mate, Hermogenes Cenabre Jr.
Ancla said his priority is to return democracy and freedom by eliminating unjust practices, such as asking for a mayor’s recommendation when applying for electricity connection with Bohol Electric Company, water supply connection, business permits, employment clearances; and unjust favors because of political patronage.
He said he would also attend to basic services like providing clean and potable water supply to every barangay down to the households; agriculture programs to lower food prices; education, free school supplies, subsidies, school feeding, and improvement of school facilities; infrastructure and road improvements; tourism; health and sanitation; as well as peace and order.
