Lawmaker: US ships’ presence violates PH sovereignty

Gabriela party list Rep. Arlene Brosas has voiced her strong opposition to the deeper involvement of US forces in the Philippines following the Dec. 26 sailing of the US Carrier Strike Group One led by USS Carl Vinson between Leyte and Mindanao.

In a statement, Brosas said this was “a brazen display of US military might that violates Philippine sovereignty.”

“This is not just ships passing in the night. The USS Carl Vinson and its strike group represent the continuing US military aggression and intervention in Philippine affairs,” she added.

Brosas emphasized that the presence of the nuclear-capable warship, along with its escort vessels USS William P. Lawrence, USS Sterett and USS Princeton, poses serious risks to Filipino communities.

“The US is making a giant military outpost out of our country, and President Marcos Jr., instead of defending our sovereignty, is instead giving way for dangerous war games and military activities by the US within our territory,” said Brosas.

“This dangerous collaboration includes the storage of weapons systems and granting of extraterritorial rights to US forces,” she added.
