LTFRB grants almost 1,300 special Holy Week permits

A total of 1,297 passenger buses across the country were granted special permits to operate during Holy Week, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) said on Saturday.

According to LTFRB Chair Vigor Mendoza II, the agency granted these buses special permits to ensure that there are enough passenger buses, as it anticipates an influx of passengers during this period.

“The increase in the number of passengers at this time of the year is normal because this is an annual religious activity that is really important for the Filipino people,” Mendoza said in a statement.

Practical bus trips

Aside from this, Mendoza said that the agency expects more passengers, as many of them may find it practical not to use their private vehicles amid the rising cost of fuel.

He said he instructed all regional directors of the agency to ensure that public utility vehicle terminals are complying with roadworthiness and inspection protocols. He also directed bus operators and drivers to ensure safe and convenient travel for their passengers.

“Our goal is to ensure the safety of commuters and other road users by ensuring the roadworthiness of buses and other PUVs (public utility vehicles), as well as the physical and mental readiness of the drivers,” Mendoza added.

The LTFRB added that it conducted intensified inspections at PUV terminals to address complaints about facilities that compromise the convenience and safety of passengers.

Mendoza warned that “violators should be called out and asked to explain why they should not be penalized.”
