LTO eyes sale of 353 impounded colorum vehicles

Mary Joy Salcedo

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) apprehended 353 colorum vehicles over the three days from Feb. 9 to Feb. 11, LTO chief Markus Lacanilao announced this on Friday as he presented some of the impounded colorum vehicles at the LTO Activity Center in Quezon City.

According to Lacanilao, the majority of the unauthorized vehicles—which included vans and buses—were apprehended in Region IV-A (Calabarzon) at 140, followed by Region II (Cagayan Valley) at 46 and Region X (Northern Mindanao) with 34 apprehensions.

In Metro Manila, a total of 29 colorum vehicles were also seized over the three-day operation.

Of the apprehended vehicles, the LTO said 107 were physically impounded, while 246 were placed under technical impoundment.

Lacanilao noted that owners of the impounded vans should pay P200,000 to retrieve their vehicles, while the buses need to be fined P1 million.

The registered owners are given six months to pay the penalty to retrieve their impounded cars.

Lacanilao said failure to do so would lead to the vehicle’s auction.

Passenger safety

He explained that the penalty coincides with the “seriousness” of the risk to the safety of passengers who would ride on their colorum vehicles.

“If these vehicles were involved in an accident, the vans’ owners cannot be held responsible,” Lacanilao said.

“The passengers can’t be helped as the vehicle has no insurance or papers to prove it. Passengers are the ones suffering,” he added.

The LTO will continue its operations to apprehend more colorum vehicles, said Lacanilao.
