CEBU CITY – The Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) was named one of the five best airports in Asia-Pacific in under 5-15 million passengers per annum category.

MCIA is the only airport from the Philippines to receive the honor.

It joined four other international airports, including three from Indonesia: the Juanda International Airport in Surabaya, Sultan Aji Muhammad Sulaiman International Airport in Kalimantan, and Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport in Ujung.

The other is Shijiazhuang Zhengding International Airport in Shijiazhuang, China.

The recognition was awarded by the Airports Council International (ACI) through its annual ASQ (Airport Service Quality) Airport Experience Awards.

This was the second time that MCIA was included in best airport in the Asia-Pacific awards in this category. The first was in 2022.

Mactan Cebu International Airport Authority General Manager Julius Neri Jr. credited the latest recognition to their focus on customer experience.

“We have been successful in projecting that. We do not only benchmark locally, but we also benchmark globally,” he said in a press conference on March 11.

While the airport is not perfect, Neri said they strive to learn from past mistakes and continuously improve for the benefit of passengers.

Credit goes to staff

Athanasios Titonis, chief executive officer of Aboitiz InfraCapital Cebu Airport Corporation, the MCIA’s private operator, expressed his gratitude to the MCIA team for their dedication in delivering excellent services.

“I am tremendously grateful to the MCIA team for fulfilling its promise of excellence in customer experience. We have been working hard to provide a world-class airport experience and elevate the perception of airports in the Philippines. This win is key to our vision of becoming the country’s main tourism and transfer gateway,” Titonis said.

ACI, a Canada-based global airport organization, announced the full list of 95 airport winners for the 2024 ASQ Airport Experience Awards.

The ASQ Airport Experience Awards recognize excellence in various categories, including best airports by size and region, most dedicated staff, easiest airport journey, most enjoyable airport, cleanest airport, and top airports for arrivals.

Recognized as the benchmark for excellence in airport customer experience, the awards are based entirely on passenger feedback.

Winners were determined through direct surveys conducted at ASQ-rated airports. For 2024, ACI gathered insights from over 700,000 surveys.
