Magnitude 6.4 quake
KORONADAL CITY—A magnitude 6.4 earthquake shook parts of Mindanao on Wednesday noon, prompting the city government of General Santos and several towns in South Cotabato province to suspend classes.
Its epicenter was traced 37 kilometers southwest off Balut Island in Sarangani, Davao Occidental.
General Santos Mayor Lorelie Pacquiao said suspending classes in public and private schools, as well as work in government and private offices, was a precautionary measure to ensure public safety following the earthquake. The city felt the ground shaking at intensity 4.
In South Cotabato, the towns of Banga, Lake Sebu, Polomolok and Tupi, as well Koronadal City, also suspended classes following the earthquake.
Local governments, as of Wednesday afternoon, had not reported any major damage although at least 22 students in South Cotabato were reported to have fainted when the quake struck.
