Man who killed 3 in Taiwan knife attack wanted over military service

Kyodo News

Taipei police on Saturday said a man wanted for violating military service procedures went on a stabbing spree and killed three people before jumping to his death.

About 10 others were injured in the rampage during the evening rush hour on Friday, in which the man threw smoke canisters and stabbed passersby at a Taipei metro station and in a nearby busy commercial district. Police believe the 27-year-old man acted alone.

An arrest warrant for the suspect, a military reservist, was issued in July after authorities were unable to deliver a reserve service summons because he had moved without updating his household registration, local media reported.

Smoke canisters

The police said the suspect set off smoke canisters at multiple locations and then moved to Taipei Main Station, where he fatally stabbed a victim and injured others, before going to a nearby hotel to change clothes.

The man later appeared on a street in the busy Zhongshan shopping district where he again set off smoke canisters and randomly stabbed people, killing two and injuring others, before jumping to his death from a commercial complex, according to the police.
