Metro Pacific Water named interim operator in Bulacan
Metro Pacific Water (MPW), a subsidiary of Metro Pacific Investments Corp. (MPIC), has taken over the water distribution system in the City of San Jose del Monte, Bulacan, as interim operator amid a water supply crisis affecting more than 250,000 residents.
Under a two-month operations and maintenance agreement signed on May 20, MPW will manage the system and conduct a technical assessment to identify the causes of service issues and determine needed long-term infrastructure improvements.
Public confidence
“Water is among the most essential services for any growing city. The entry of [MWP] into San Jose del Monte reflects our broader commitment to support local governments in addressing critical infrastructure challenges that directly affect communities,” MPIC chairman and chief executive office Manuel Pangilinan said.
He noted that the company aims to help restore public confidence in the city’s water system.
Mayor Florida Robes expressed hope that reliable water service would be restored within a year.
The takeover comes a month after the city government assumed control of water assets previously managed by PrimeWater Infrastructure Corp. and the San Jose del Monte Water District. Two courts have since dismissed PrimeWater’s petitions seeking to stop the takeover.
PrimeWater has faced mounting complaints over poor water service, prompting congressional investigations. In December, the Villar Group announced that Lucio Co-led Crystal Bridges Holding Corp. would acquire the company.
