NBI discourages travel updates on social media
The National Bureau of Investigation warned the public to be careful with their social media activities, particularly when taking long vacations.
The NBI issued the advisory on Saturday as many Filipino households are likely to travel to take advantage of the Christmas and New Year holidays.
“Vacations are meant for rest—not risk. Think before you post and keep your home safe while you’re away,” the NBI said.
The agency detailed ways in which internet users could avoid security risks while away from home, highlighting that “criminals monitor social media to identify potential targets.”
It advised against posting “real-time travel updates” and announcing that “[their] home is unattended.”
It also recommended posting travel photos after returning home, and “[limiting] post visibility and [reviewing] privacy settings.”
The NBI also warned against any social media interactions from unknown accounts.
It said any suspicious behavior must immediately be reported.
Filipinos are among the world’s top social media users, with Facebook as the most popular platform.
The average Filipino spends 8 hours and 52 minutes on the internet daily, according to We Are Social’s annual report on global digital trends.
