On Tuesday, the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) reported that it had apprehended a suspect who had allegedly killed the son of one of its agents.

During a press conference, NBI Director Jaime Santiago said that John Michael Garcia was arrested on Monday in Malolos City, Bulacan. He is accused of killing Luke Maraneg, a son of an NBI agent.

According to the NBI, Maraneg was killed on Nov. 24 last year in Baguio City after he was shot by Garcia. At that time, the suspect had a plan to kill Maraneg’s companion, whom the NBI mentioned had a previous relationship with Garcia’s girlfriend.

“The son of our agent, who is a graduating law student and only 27 years old, got dragged into the situation,” Santiago said. “His intended target remained unharmed.” The NBI said Garcia went into hiding since the incident and had been moving to different places such as Baguio, Pangasinan, and La Union, in order to evade authorities.

His location was eventually tracked down to Barangay Mambog in Malolos City.

The NBI conducted surveillance and discovered that Garcia was staying at his aunt’s apartment, where he was ultimately arrested.

The suspect is currently detained at the NBI’s Pampanga District Office and is facing charges of murder and attempted murder before a Baguio City court.
