Cat and mouse among the poor
A man on Friday finishes his breakfast at an eatery on Timog Avenue, Quezon City, as its operators hurriedly take away their pots, pans, cooking utensils and other belongings during a sidewalk clearing operation by enforcers of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority. Relief from the Heat
Villagers on Friday take a dip in the Pampanga River in Palayan City, Nueva Ecija province, amid the heat wave worsened by El Niño already stretching to almost a month, since weather bureau Pagasa began monitoring the heat index after the Holy Week break. Last week, the heat index in the province, as in other parts of the country including Metro Manila, ranged between the “extreme caution” level of 41 degrees Celsius to the “danger” level of 48 C.

Fire and outage

A power interruption hit this neighborhood of about 100 homes on Friday after an electric post caught fire. Repairmen traced the outage to the unstable power supply caused by high consumption amid the hot weather.

Against the Drills
Estelita Dy (top photo), a 94-year-old survivor of wartime sex slavery during the Japanese Occupation, attends a forum on Friday led by activist groups to join their call against the ongoing “Balika-tan” exercises and the Philippine government’s policy of forging military alliances with Japan and other countries. The drills between Philippine and US troops are the most expansive yet, with the participation of the French Navy and of other nations acting as observers.
