PRESS CON FOR ACCUSED The National Bureau of Investigation on Friday grants Arnolfo Teves Jr. the platform of a news conference (1ST photo)—which an ordinary defendant, if confronted by the gravity of the charges against the expelled lawmaker, might otherwise be denied. Teves, who was arrested two days earlier in Timor-Leste after two years in hiding there, is facing 27 counts of murder, frustrated murder and attempted murder, including the 2023 assassination of his rival, then Negros Oriental Gov. Roel Degamo. The attendance of his mother Zenaida (2nd photo) at the press conference served to highlight further that privilege accorded to Teves. But he maintained that “my conscience is clear,” while his lawyer insisted that Teves’ return to Manila constituted a kidnapping. —MARIANNE BERMUDEZ
