Number of Filipino students attending US schools on the rise–US Embassy
More than 4,000 Filipinos pursued higher education in the United States last academic year, the first time in 15 years that the number of Filipino students on US campuses exceeded this threshold, the US embassy said on Wednesday.
According to the Open Doors 2024 Report on International Educational Exchange, 4,100 Filipinos studied at higher education institutions in the United States during the 2023-2024 academic year, a 7.4 percent increase from the previous academic year.
The Open Doors report, released on Monday to mark International Education Week, is published annually by the Institute of International Education with funding from the US government to provide information and data on international students studying in the United States.
Based on its data, 2,074 Filipinos pursued their undergraduate studies in the United States in the 2023-2024 academic year, marking a near 17-percent increase compared to the previous year.
“This growth highlights the strong educational ties between the Philippines and the United States,” said US Ambassador to the Philippines Marykay Carlson.
“More and more Filipinos are choosing to study in U.S. colleges and universities for their world-class teaching and research opportunities, extracurricular activities, internships, and the chance to live independently in a culturally and geographically diverse country,” she added.
According to the US embassy, the EducationUSA office in the Philippines serves as a key resource for Filipino students interested in studying in the United States by providing free advising sessions, workshops, and outreach activities offered across the country.
As part of International Education Week, EducationUSA and the Philippine-American Educational Foundation will host a free virtual graduate studies fair featuring 50 US universities today, Nov. 21, at 8 p.m. via Zoom.
