P500-M budget sought for stalled PUP project
Around P500 million is still needed to complete construction of the nine-story academic building on the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) main campus in Sta. Mesa, Manila, Pinoy Workers partylist Rep. Karl Josef Legazpi said on Wednesday.
During the House plenary deliberations on the proposed 2027 budget for state universities and colleges (SUCs) next year, Akbayan Rep. Dadah Kiram Ismula asked Legazpi how the budget for the building would be utilized. She noted that the P106 million for its capital outlay in 2025 went unreleased.
“There was actually a failure of bidding and the project was not implemented. They still need P500 million to complete the nine-story building,” said Legazpi, the SUCs budget sponsor.
He added that the project is being implemented by the Department of Public Works and Highways which still has the unreleased funding for the capital outlay.
PUP officials had said the three-phase project was expected to be completed by 2024 or early 2025.
