Pagasa notes wind shifts, sees rainy season in 2 weeks

Southwesterly winds have recently become more persistent in recent days, indicating the possible start of the rainy season in the next two weeks, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

“Recent weather analysis over the past several days has shown the persistence of low-level southwesterly winds over the western section of Luzon and the Frontal System over Extreme Northern Luzon,” Pagasa said in a statement signed by Administrator Nathaniel Servando.

“With the weakening of the Easterlies, these developments indicate the beginning of the Southwest Monsoon or “habagat” in the Philippines—one of the precursors of the onset of the rainy season,” Pagasa said.

This will likely lead occasional to frequent rains and thunderstorms over the western sections of the country, leading to the onset of the rainy season within the next two weeks, the weather bureau added.

Expect start of rains

In its 5 p.m. advisory on Friday, Pagasa forecast heavy rainfall in some parts of Luzon, particularly Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur and Zambales, Cagayan, Isabela, La Union, Pangasinan, Bataan, Apayao, and Abra.

The bureau also forecast heavy rainfall due to a frontal system in Batanes, including the Babuyan islands.

Pagasa warned of possible flooding and landslides in areas that have seen little rain since the start of the year.

Meteorologists reported the first weather system of the 2025 season, a tropical depression, in the West Philippines Sea in February, but it dissipated within 24 hours.

Based on Pagasa’s official list of names, the first typhoon of the 2025 season will be named “Auring.”
