Pagasa records coldest day so far in 2026: 9 degrees celsius in Baguio City

BAGUIO CITY—The temperature in this city dropped to 9 degrees Celsius at 5 a.m. on Saturday, the lowest temperature recorded in the country so far this year.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said the unusually low temperature was caused by prevailing cold winds and seasonal weather patterns, especially the northeast monsoon, locally called “amihan.”

The country’s all-time lowest temperature remains 6.3 C, recorded in Baguio City, on Jan. 18, 1961.

Altitude factor

Baguio is about 1,500 meters above sea level and Pagasa typically records the coldest days of the year from that city, but many other areas in the country are higher than Baguio—like Tuba, Benguet, which is much colder—but do not have the weather bureau’s equipment.

Early this week, the temperature lingered at 13 C, with the mercury dropping to 13.4 C on Tuesday and Thursday, Pagasa said, as it predicted that the amihan would continue to prevail all over the country, bringing cold temperatures.

Pagasa weather specialist Loriedin dela Cruz said that the northeast monsoon may also bring cloudy skies and light rain over Aurora, Quezon province, Bicol Region, Samar and Dinagat Islands.

Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon are forecast to experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with chances of isolated rainshowers.

She added that light rains are expected over Northern and Eastern Samar, while the rest of Visayas and Mindanao will see partly cloudy to cloudy skies with possible isolated rainshowers due to amihan.
