Palace declares June 24 a holiday in Manila

President Marcos has declared June 24 a holiday in Manila to celebrate the 454th founding anniversary of the Philippine capital. Under Proclamation No. 925 dated June 11 which was published in the Official Gazette on Tursday, June 24 or Araw ng Maynila was designated a special nonworking day.
“It is but fitting and proper that the people of the City of Manila be given full opportunity to participate in the occasion and enjoy the celebration,” the President said in authorizing the local holiday.
Manila is the country’s capital and seat of government.
It is also the second most populous city after Quezon City with a population of 1.846 million according to the 2020 census.
Araw ng Maynila celebrates the day that Spanish conquistador Miguel Lopez de Legazpi set foot in Manila on June 24, 1571, and declared it a territory of Mexico.
