PCG divers find another victim from sunken ferry

Gabryelle Dumalag

Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) technical divers on Saturday recovered one male cadaver during underwater operations at the wreck site of MV Trisha Kerstin 3, bringing the death toll from the maritime incident to 54.

In an update, the PCG said 293 people survived the incident, while 25 others remain missing.

The body was retrieved as divers began a new phase of search operations, focusing on the submerged vessel and the surrounding debris field.

The roll-on, roll-off passenger ferry, operated by Aleson Shipping Lines, sank on Jan. 26 while traveling from Zamboanga City to Jolo, Sulu. The vessel was carrying hundreds of passengers and crew when it sent out a distress signal before capsizing.

The PCG said the casualty figures were the result of joint validation by appropriate authorities and affected families.
