Peta appeals to evacuees: Don’t leave pets behind

As heavy rains induced by the southwest monsoon or “habagat” continue to cause floods in many parts of the country, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals Asia (Peta) has urged the public to never leave behind their animal companions, such as dogs and cats, in case they need to evacuate.

In a statement on Tuesday, Peta said that even animals feel the cold and the need to be safe, as it offered the following tips to ensure their welfare during the rainy season:

  • If at all avoidable, never leave your animals behind to fend for themselves when evacuating.
  • Never tie animals up or leave them caged or confined in any way, as they will be trapped and unable to flee from rising floodwaters.
  • If your house has a second floor, ensure that animals have access so that they can escape rising floodwaters.

Provisions needed

  • If you are able to evacuate with animals, place the small ones in secure cages and keep dogs leashed as frightening sounds and unfamiliar surroundings may make them bolt. Take water and food bowls, your animals’ favorite toys or blankets, a towel and enough food for at least a week.
  • Keep a lookout for other animals in need, including strays and those who have been left behind by neighbors.

The international animal rights organization also urged the public to call its emergency rescue line at 0999 888 Peta (7382) in cases of emergency in which an animal’s life is in immediate danger.
