PH, Palau fortify ties for Pacific cooperation
The leaders of the Philippines and Palau on Monday reaffirmed their bilateral ties, emphasizing maritime cooperation, economic collaboration and labor partnerships between the two Pacific nations.
In a statement, President Marcos cited the “deep historical and cultural ties” between Filipinos and Palauans, with their shared maritime identity and commitment to environmental protection the key pillars in their partnership.
“Our ties with Palau predate our formal diplomatic relations. Ours is a friendship borne out of the common struggle for independence and freedom,” he said.
Mr. Marcos made the statement as he hosted Palauan President Surangel Whipps Jr. in Malacañang on Monday, with the two countries set to mark the 30th year of their diplomatic relations in 2027.
At their joint press conference, the President and Whipps committed to continuing engagements between their governments.
They discussed ongoing efforts to delimit maritime boundaries and enhance cooperation in the fisheries sector.
Labor cooperation was also tackled, with Mr. Marcos expressing optimism about finalizing a labor cooperation agreement that would enhance protections for around 4,000 Filipinos working in Palau.
The two leaders agreed to work for the crafting of the Social Security Agreement, which would grant Filipino workers in the country access to social benefits.
“With them in mind, I look forward to the conclusion of our labor cooperation agreement that aims to protect and promote the welfare of Filipino workers in Palau,” Mr. Marcos said.
He and Whipps also explored formal cooperation in health and human resource development, with plans for collaboration in technical-vocational education and training.
