Philippines, Ireland eye joint military training

Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. explored likely areas of cooperation between the Philippines and Ireland, including joint military training, when he met with Ireland Ambassador Emma Hickey at Camp Aguinaldo on Monday.

The Department of National Defense (DND) said in a statement on Wednesday that their discussions centered on possible collaboration in maritime security and peacekeeping as both sides look to deepen cross-regional ties.

Teodoro also invited Ireland to consider holding a maritime cooperative activity with the Philippines as part of a broader push to strengthen adherence to a rules-based international order, the DND added. There is currently no formal defense cooperation agreement between the two countries.

The DND said that Teodoro also welcomed exchanges of best practices with Ireland, particularly on force recruitment and sustainment.
