PNP: Good Friday ‘generally peaceful’
The Philippine National Police on Saturday said the nationwide observance of Good Friday was generally peaceful, except for a number of drownings and the entrapment of 18 hikers in a grass fire in Bakun, Benguet.
But PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. warned the public to continue to take precautions as more people are expected to travel ahead of Easter Sunday.
Nartatez reported at least seven drowning-related cases around the country as of 6 a.m. on Friday while 18 hikers were trapped after being surrounded by a grass fire in Mt. Kabunian in Bakun, Benguet, on Thursday.
Mt. Kabunian, a popular trekking destination, drew hikers over the Holy Week when the fire reportedly broke out at around 6:50 p.m.
According to the Bakun Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, 11 tourists and two tour guides were at the summit when the fire broke out, while seven tourists and one guide were stranded at Station 12 along the foot trail.
Emergency responders, including personnel from the Bureau of Fire Protection, local police, barangay officials and tour guides, reached the seven stranded hikers and escorted them to the barangay hall before dawn on Good Friday.
Following the incident, Bakun Municipal Mayor Fausto Labinio prohibited trekking activities at Mt. Kabunian “until further notice” while he urged the public to “take precautionary measures, avoid the area and remain vigilant against fire hazards.”
Orderly manner
But Nartatez said masses and processions were carried out in an orderly manner across Catholic communities, citing public cooperation and coordination with local authorities,
“Plan ahead, be alert of your surroundings and follow the simple reminders of the PNP,” he said in a statement. “This way, our observance of Holy Week with family and friends will be safer and more peaceful.”
The PNP also reminded travelers to follow traffic rules and keep watch over children, particularly in crowded places and near water.
The police remained on full alert as Filipinos observe Black Saturday, with police officers deployed in transport hubs, tourist spots and other public areas where crowds are expected.
“The PNP urges everyone to stay cautious and observe Holy Week safely, ensuring a peaceful and worry-free period of reflection and devotion,” Nartatez reiterated.
