Police intelligence officer survives robbery, 9 gunshot wounds

An intelligence officer of the Philippine National Police–Highway Patrol Group (PNP-HPG) ended up in the hospital with nine gunshot wounds after he was targeted by two robbers in Makati City on Friday.

PNP-HPG spokesperson Lt. Nadame Malang said in a press briefing at Camp Crame on Tuesday that the victim was in stable condition, according to his family. The PNP-HPG has extended financial assistance to them, he added.

According to Malang, the victim was approached by two unidentified men as he was having his vehicle washed at the corner of Edison and Faraday Streets in Barangay San Isidro.

He said the police officer, whom he did not identify, was shot in the shoulder, stomach, thigh and knee. The armed men then took his service firearm, wallet and necklace.

The victim’s child, who was with him at the time of the incident, was unharmed, although Malang said the shooting caused some trauma.

“The intelligence officer was wearing a necklace. That’s also one of the things our investigators at the Makati police station saw, which was the reason why they actually grabbed him and tried to take his jewelry,” Malang added. “Our officer tried to fight back, but there were two suspects or gun shooters.”

Footage taken by a closed-circuit TV camera of the incident showed the victim tried to draw his gun but was shot by the suspects, who drove away on a motorcycle.

Malang said the victim handles “delicate” cases and was supposed to take the lead in another case on the day he was attacked.
