PUBLIC APOLOGY

The Philippine Daily Inquirer (PDI) sincerely apologizes to Mayor Ramon Oñate of Palompon, Leyte, for the erroneous information in articles published on Oct. 10, 2024, and March 3, 2025.
The first pertained to the mayor’s supposed withdrawal from his reelection bid following the Office of the Ombudsman’s order to dismiss him from the service. The mayor, however, remains a candidate for mayor. His name is on the Commission on Elections’ official list of candidates for mayor of Palompon for the May 12 elections.
The second article was about the Court of Appeals’ decision dismissing the mayor’s petition to overturn his dismissal from service by the Ombudsman. What was dismissed was his request for a temporary restraining order, not the main petition.
We regret the inconvenience and disappointment that these errors might have caused the mayor and his family, but we assure them that these were inadvertent and committed without an intent to misinform or malign him and his family.
A clarificatory story was immediately published on March 8, 2025 after the errors were brought to our attention.
