This Week’s Milestones: Nov 26 to Dec 2

The conversion of Dasmariñas in Cavite from a municipality to a city was ratified in a plebiscite. Residents of Dasmariñas voted to ratify Republic Act No. 9723 which was signed by then President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on Oct. 15. Two years later, in 2011, the local government declared the Paru-Paro Festival as the official festival of the City of Dasmariñas. According to local officials, the festival reflects the city’s transformation from a former small village of Imus City and its separation as a full-fledged progressive city. Dasmariñas is a first-class city composed of 75 barangays and has a population of 703,141, according to the 2020 census.

Nov. 26, 2018

A groundbreaking ceremony was held for the construction of two school buildings for Mapandi Elementary School in Barangay Gadongan in Marawi City. The project was worth P3.5 million and was sponsored by the Coca Cola Foundation Philippines and in partnership with the Philippine Business for Social Progress, Marawi Schools Division, and Marawi City government. The stakeholders said they were committed to help rebuild Marawi City, which suffered from the siege.

Nov. 27, 2006

The Malabrigo Lighthouse, also known as the Faro de Punta de Malabrigo, in Lobo, Batangas, was named a historical landmark. A marker was installed by the National Historical Institute the following year. The Malabrigo Lighthouse was one of the 24 lighthouses built in the Philippines during the Spanish colonial period. The lighthouse was designed by Guillermo Brockman in 1891 and was built in 1896. The structure was Victorian inspired and has a cylindrical brick tower with metal staircase, an adjacent pavilion, and a machine room. The lighthouse served as a guide to sea vessels at the Verde Island Passage.

Nov. 28, 2018

The groundbreaking ceremony for the P7.3-billion Panguil Bay Bridge project in Tubod, Lanao del Norte, was held. The bridge, which would connect Tubod and the rest of Lanao del Norte to Ozamis City, Misamis Occidental, was funded by the Korean Economic Development Cooperation Agreement through the Korean Export-Import Bank. The Panguil Bay Bridge, according to government officials, will be one of the longest bridges in the country at a length of 2.360 kilometers. It will have approach roads of 1.412 km and two lanes each measuring 15 meters.

The Sumbingtik Festival in Cainta, Rizal, which will be held from Nov. 24 to Dec. 1, will push through with the observance of minimum health and safety protocols based on the alert level system for COVID-19 response.
