Robredo: LP to navigate challenging times sans Lagman
BACACAY, ALBAY—Former Vice President Leni Robredo acknowledged the “challenging” time ahead of the Liberal Party (LP) following the death of Albay Rep. Edcel Lagman.
“He was our leader, and filling the void he left behind will be extremely difficult. As president of the party, he introduced many reforms that helped shape its future,” Robredo said.
Robredo, who visited the wake here of Lagman on Sunday, reflected on her fellow Bicolano’s enduring influence on both the Bicol region and the LP, which he led until his passing.
In an interview, she expressed sorrow over his death, calling it a “significant loss” not only for Albay but also for the party and the broader political landscape.
“The loss is deeply felt, especially within the Liberal Party,” said Robredo, who also used to lead the party that was the dominant political force during the administration of the late President Benigno Aquino III.
As she acknowledged the challenges ahead for LP, she noted the need for restructuring and realignment following Lagman’s passing.
Trusted adviser
“We are in the process of rebuilding and moving forward without his guidance will be a great challenge,” she shared.
Lagman, fondly known as “Manong Edcel,” had served as the party’s president since 2022 and represented Albay’s first district from July 30, 2016, until his passing earlier this year.
He was also a trusted political adviser to Robredo during her tenure as vice president.
The Lagman family expressed gratitude for the support and condolences from the public, saying it has provided comfort during this difficult time.
“Robredo’s visit eases our pain. Dad and VP Leni were allies in public service, bound by their shared principles and commitment to ensuring marginalized communities had a voice in policymaking,” Lagman’s son, Albay Gov. Grex Lagman, told the Inquirer.
Despite their grief, Grex said the family takes solace in knowing that his father lived a full life dedicated to public service.
He said friends and supporters were invited to pay their respects for the late lawmaker, which will be held at his residence in Sogod Village, Bacacay, Albay, until tomorrow.
Lagman’s remains will then be transported to Manila for a viewing and necrological service in Congress on Wednesday, according to Lagman’s daughter, Tabaco City Mayor Krisel Lagman.
Lagman’s body will be transferred to Mt. Carmel Shrine in Quezon City on Wednesday, where it will remain until Feb. 9. His final interment is scheduled for Feb. 10 at Loyola Memorial Park in Marikina City.
