Sara’s camp: We want Madriaga alive

Dempsey Reyes

The legal camp of Vice President Sara Duterte on Friday denied that it had anything to do with the death threats received by Ramil Madriaga, her alleged “bagman,” and even expressed support for him to be provided with additional security.

“VP Sara has nothing to do with any death threats to Madriaga and we join any calls to provide him with additional protection,” said Salvador Paolo Panelo Jr., the counsel for Duterte in her perjury complaint against Madriaga over his affidavit.

In fact, Panelo said Duterte’s camp “want him alive,” noting that Madriaga is the only one who can confess whether or not his testimony was true or not and for him to “identify his handlers.”

No motive

Panelo was responding to the incident that Madriaga was being intimidated and threatened at his detention cell in Camp Bagong Diwa, Taguig City, as disclosed by one of his lawyers, Raymund Palad.

Madriaga’s camp asked for additional security from the National Bureau of Investigation, which the agency provided for his “peace of mind.”

Panelo said their camp supports the call for Madriaga to be provided with additional protection, but for very different reasons.

“We want him alive and in the pink of health because he’s the only one who can admit that he made up his testimony against the Vice President and identify his handlers,” Panelo said.

He also urged Madriaga to come forward and add details to his testimony, where he alleged that he used to work for Duterte when she was Davao City mayor and that she was tapped to deliver large sums of money to various areas upon the Vice President’s orders.
