Senator wants lifeguards for every public pool

Avatar

As many Filipino families flock to beaches and other vacation destinations to beat the summer heat, Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian has renewed his call for the mandatory designation of lifeguards in public swimming pools and bathing facilities to curb cases of drowning.

“There have been numerous instances of children drowning at beaches due to inadequate safety measures.

In response to this concern, I have introduced Senate Bill No. 1142, also known as the Lifeguard Act of 2022, which delineates the responsibilities of pool operators and local government units in promoting water safety and preventing such tragedies,” he said in a statement.

Gatchalian also stressed that it is crucial to strengthen measures that protect children by ensuring they have access to adequate medical and emergency services.
