Solo parents get free train rides
Two Metro Manila train systems will be giving free rides during peak hours to single parents as the country observes National Solo Parents’ Day on Saturday.
The Department of Transportation said single mothers and fathers only need to show train station personnel their valid government-issued Solo Parent’s Identification Card in order to avail themselves of a free ride at Metro Rail Transit 3 (MRT 3) and Light Rail Transit 2 (LRT 2) from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday.
“We salute all solo parents who exhaustingly sacrifice to raise their children. With our free ride, we aim to make them happy on their special day. May we impart on all solo parents our admiration and appreciation of their sacrifices,” Transportation Assistant Secretary for railways Jorjette Aguino, concurrent MRT 3 officer in charge, said in a statement.
The Light Rail Transit Authority said it hoped the free ride will somehow inspire solo parents to keep on providing for their families.
“We at LRTA, we know the heavy responsibilities of solo parents. That is why in this celebration, the LRT wants to show our admiration and gratitude through our gift of free ride,” LRT Administrator Hernando Cabrera said.
Republic Act No. 11861, or the Expanded Solo Parents Welfare Act of 2022, declared the third week and third Saturday of April of every year as Solo Parents Week and National Solo Parents Day, respectively, to commemorate the role and significance of every solo parent in the Philippines. INQ
