DISCOUNT ASSURED Students, persons with disabilities (PWDs) and seniors need only to present their school, PWD and senior IDs, respectively, to avail themselves of the special Beep cards at any train station. —NIÑO JESUS ORBETA
Starting next month, Beep cards exclusively for the use of students, persons with disabilities (PWDs) and senior citizens will be available at all stations of the Metro Rail Transit 3 (MRT 3) and Light Rail Transit (LRT) Lines 1 and 2, Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon said on Wednesday.
The special Beep cards, which serve as tickets to the three train systems, automatically grant 50 percent fare discounts to holders.
In an interview with reporters after an inspection of ticket vending machines at the LRT 2 Antipolo station, Dizon said the fare discount will be programmed into the exclusive Beep cards.
“If you are a student, you can go to any station of the MRT 3 and LRT 1 and 2 in September, show your ID and right then and there, your Beep card will be printed one time,” he added.
The Department of Transportation secretary, however, said that students will need to renew or reactivate their Beep cards every school year.
Good for one year
“Meaning, after one year, your card won’t work anymore. So you have to go back to a train station, show your student ID for the next year so that you can get a new student Beep card,” Dizon said.
For PWDs and senior citizens, they also need to present their respective IDs at any of the stations to avail of the special Beep cards that, unlike the one issued to students, do not expire.
Dizon said that all train stations will have a dedicated window for the printing of the exclusive cards that will not require the filling out of forms.
