Taiwanese fraud suspect nabbed
The Bureau of Immigration (BI) arrested a 27-year-old Taiwanese national accused of leading a syndicate in Manila that allegedly defrauded more than 200 Taiwanese of over P200 million.
Yu Sheng Fu was arrested in Barangay Cabancalan, Mandaue City, Cebu, on Oct. 29, following a request from the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Manila, BI said in a statement on Saturday.
Citing information from Taiwan’s Criminal Investigation Bureau, BI said Yu headed the syndicate operating in the Philippine capital.
In a separate operation on Nov. 2, immigration agents arrested South Korean national Ha Joonho, 46, in Pasay City over his alleged involvement in illegal online gambling dating from 2019 until the pandemic.
Both foreigners are detained at the BI facility in Taguig City pending deportation proceedings.
The bureau said they would be placed on its blacklist once deportation orders are issued, barring their return to the Philippines.
Immigration Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado said the arrests underscored his agency’s efforts to prevent foreign fugitives from seeking refuge in the country.
