A teachers’ group on Sunday welcomed the new guidelines that give teachers lighter teaching loads and more learning time for students.

The Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) said the Department of Education (DepEd) Order No. 012, series of 2024, was a product of teachers’ dialogue with DepEd officials.

ACT Chair Vladimer Quetua said earlier rules were meant to equalize time allotments for all subjects and shorten the learning time for students. “But we told them that this is not applicable to everyone,” Quetua told the Inquirer in a phone interview. Mathematics, for example, should be taught at a slow pace for students to fully understand the lessons.

The new guidelines also means that teachers will now have about five to six teaching loads compared to the seven to eight loading in the old guidelines, he added. —DEMPSEY REYES
