Terranova oil siphoning operations nearly done

The removal of the industrial oil from a tanker that sunk off Bataan in July would be completed by Friday, with 1.384 million liters collected so far, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said on Wednesday. The siphoning operations for M/T Terranova were supposed to be done on Sept. 10 but after the contracted salvor collected mostly water, it was decided to extend the process to Friday.

The PCG said this was to ensure “the recovery of oily waste on all cargo oil tanks, pipelines, and compartments of the sunken vessel.” The tanker owned by Shogun Ships Co. Inc. sunk on July 25 in rough waters off Limay town in Bataan province, leaving one of the 17 crew members dead. At that time, it was carrying 1.4 million liters of industrial oil.
