Top concerns of Pinoys still inflation, pay hike

Controlling inflation and raising the pay of workers remain the top national concerns for Filipinos, according to the latest Pulse Asia “Ulat ng Bayan” survey released on Thursday.

The results of the survey conducted from June 26 to June 30 showed that out of 16 national concerns, only two were identified as urgent by the majority of respondents.

Inflation topped the list with 62 percent of adult Filipinos citing it as the most urgent issue, followed by 51 percent who pointed to increasing workers’ pay.

Concern over inflation was consistently high across all geographic areas: 72 percent in Metro Manila, 64 percent in Mindanao, and 60 percent both in Luzon outside Metro Manila and the Visayas.

Concern over wages, on the other hand, was most prevalent in the Visayas at 54 percent, followed by Luzon outside Metro Manila at 51 percent, and in Metro Manila and Mindanao at both 49 percent.

Across socioeconomic classes, concern over inflation was highest among Class D at 63 percent, followed by Classes ABC and Class E, both at 62 percent. Concern over workers’ pay was highest in Classes ABC and D at 51 percent, while Class E followed closely at 48 percent.

But compared to the previous Ulat ng Bayan survey in April, concern over inflation dropped by eight percentage points from 70 percent, while concern over workers’ pay rose significantly by 17 points from 34 percent.

Other national issues seen as urgent by respondents included poverty reduction (26 percent), job creation (25 percent), and fighting graft and corruption (24 percent). Lower on the list were criminality and involuntary hunger (17 percent each), peace promotion (15 percent), agricultural assistance (13 percent), and support for small entrepreneurs (12 percent).

Other issues

Only around a tenth of Filipinos viewed rule of law (11 percent), tax reduction (9 percent), and environmental protection (8 percent) as urgent issues.

Of the least concern to respondents were national territorial integrity (5 percent), welfare of overseas Filipino workers or OFWs (4 percent), and terrorism (1 percent).

The survey also revealed that the Marcos administration earned majority approval ratings in only three out of 14 key national issues: responding to calamities (63 percent), protecting the welfare of OFWs (62 percent) and providing assistance to farmers (53 percent).

It was also appreciated for handling issues like national territorial integrity (48 percent), environmental degradation (44 percent), enforcing the law, promoting peace and job creation (both at 42 percent).

On criminality, the administration posted nearly even scores: 39 percent approval versus 36 percent disapproval.

On the other hand, disapproval ratings were notably high in areas such as controlling inflation (66 percent), reducing poverty (54 percent) and fighting corruption (50 percent). Other national issues with elevated disapproval were increased workers’ pay (48 percent) and involuntary hunger (40 percent).

Pulse Asia interviewed 1,200 adult respondents nationwide and used a margin of error of plus-or-minus 2.8 percentage points at a national level and plus-or-minus 5.7 percent for subnational estimates.
