Unexploded ordinance found in Bataan school

BALANGA CITY—The assumption of the newly designated director of Philippine National Police Region 3, Police Col. Marites Salvadora, was almost met with a “bang” following the discovery of an unexploded ordnance (UXO) inside a high school in Pilar town in Bataan on Saturday.
Police found the UXO inside the compound of Dr. Victoria B. Roman Memorial High School in Barangay Pantingan after residents noticed the strange metal protruding while they were cleaning the school grounds and buildings for the May elections and Bataan Day on April 9.
According to Police Maj. Dennis Duran, Bataan police information officer, the residents reported the object inside the school to the authorities, which prompted the police operation on Saturday, Duran said.
Upon inspection, police found that the UXO, bearing an unused 105-mm projectile, was strong enough to turn a school building to rubble, a police report added.
Police were still investigating to find out the origin of the UXO and the identity and motive of the person who placed it inside the school.
Report stated that the UXO was safely secured and turned over to Bataan provincial explosive ordnance disposal and canine unit for proper handling.
Salvadora asked local residents to immediately report any information about loose firearms and explosives to the local police.
Salvadora assumed her new position last week, replacing Police Col. Palmer Tria, who is now assigned to Camp Olivas.
