From knowledge to wisdom: How reading books enriches our lives

The article “A book is just never a book” (Young Blood, 3/24/25) shares an authentic narrative of how a book becomes part of our lives. This is mainly because of its unique way of stimulating our thought process, shaping how we think (cognitive), and touching our emotions, which affect how we behave and act (affective).
On the other hand, data from the article “Why Filipinos don’t read” (Looking Back, 4/17/24) mentioned that “leisure activities were more interesting” while “reading books was for school activities and was not even remotely considered a leisure activity.” However, our society should be made aware of interesting topics to read to realize that reading is also a leisure activity. Many can relate and agree that one of the most interesting “learning-leisure books” is “The Happiness Project” by Gretchen Rubin, where readers can enjoy the journey of experiences on how to be happy.
Life changes, worldview, experiences, and interests shaped the thinking and affected the life trajectory of Zeno, the first of the Stoics or the Greek and Mediterranean philosophers and thinkers, who lived by and shared with others the virtues of courage, temperance, justice, and wisdom. Instead of being devastated by the loss of his valuable goods in a shipwreck, he visited a bookstore and listened to the teachings of Socrates and ancient philosophers from a storyteller, searched for answers to his questions about life, and learned wisdom from thinkers. As a result, Zeno developed the wisdom that significantly changed his worldview to experience a lasting liberating and fulfilling life.
We can read books in public libraries, those that are privately owned, or in universities or schools. There is a wide range of books by different authors with different perspectives on a particular topic as well as an extensive number of “related” books that can supplement our interest in learning about a particular topic.
We are blessed to appreciate books that provide answers and ideas to daily questions, challenges, and future aspirations. Books provide us with comfort and convenience in managing both our personal and professional responsibilities. Books also enlighten us about the complexities around us and in the world, helping us lead a tranquil, enjoyable, and enriching life.
