Go home!

Avatar

According to Gen. Tristan Kison, “GHQ” stands for General Head Quarters for the Philippine Army. But, in jest, he says that when his wife sends him via text message GHQ, it means “Go Home Quickly.” And he promptly responds RAM—“Right Away Mama!”

The Gospel today (Luke 15: 1-3; 11-32) speaks about the prodigal son going home to his father after living a life of sin, disobedience, and selfishness. He could have opted to continue his miserable and sinful life, but he came to his senses and decided to go home to his loving father. It is honesty and humility that can help us go home.

We all get lost. We all go astray. We all wander far from home. No matter how far, no matter how long, we all have a homing instinct that helps us find our way back home. There is always that part in us that seeks completeness, that restlessness till we find ourselves in our “home” again.

GO HOME TO GOD. “Restless are our hearts till they rest in You” (St. Augustine). Our real home is heaven. Our final destination is to go back to heaven someday after we have done our mission in this world. We go through this “valley of tears,” but the gates of heaven are open and await us. We are reminded again today: “What does it profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his soul?” Mark 8:36)

GO HOME TO YOUR HEART. There are people who are really dear or near to you, and they are the family and true friends that are in your heart. There are people we often forget or take for granted, but they are the ones who really care and mean well for us. We meet a lot of people as we journey on but let us not forget to treasure those who truly know us, accept us, and love us like no other.

GO HOME TO YOUR SOUL. All too often, we are focused on our pursuits of our material and worldly agenda, and we forget that we have a soul. We are human beings that have a hunger and thirst for the “finer” things in life. Our souls can get starved, malnourished, and die when we do not care, nourish, or value our emotional and spiritual well-being.

GO HOME TO GOODNESS. Let us remember the original goodness, and the original values that define us. The world teaches us to be selfish, to be proud, to be successful, and to have a comfortable life. As we go through life, may we not let go of our innate goodness and kindness. Remember, there is always that part of you that is good, beautiful, and free.

GO HOME TO COUNTRY. Tennis star, 19 years old Alex Eala has reminded us all that we must continue to help lift up our country and our people. What an inspiration! She makes us proud to the world that we Filipinos are made of good stuff. She brings honor and hope for us, amidst some Filipinos who bring shame and hopelessness to the Filipino people. Let us love our country. Let us help our people in any way we can.

GO HOME TO HEAVEN. So focused on our financial and career journey, we often take for granted or forget our journey to God’s heart. Some of us, have come a long way financially and materially, but are still a long way from the heart of God. Some of us are flying on high altitude but still have many bad attitudes. Help make heaven happen here now for others and you, too, will experience heaven now, and make it to heaven someday.

Have you ever cried to God with your problems? Have you ever cried to God for His forgiveness of your sins? If you have, then you are close to God, and you know what it is like to be loved by God without conditions. Then you have arrived, you are home in God’s heart. Welcome home!

Home now. Try this: Bow your head, close your eyes, and just embrace yourself prayerfully, and allow yourself to be embraced by God, right here, right now. Just stay in that loving embrace. Just allow yourself to be embraced by God. No words, no thoughts, just let the Spirit of God bless, and enfold you. Embraced by God … you are home … now.

A moment with the Lord:

Lord, no matter where we are, may we always find our way back home to You. Amen.
