Is World War III in the offing?

Various political experts and analysts across the globe are sounding the alarm about an imminent world war amid the continuing conflict in the Middle East and China’s persistent aggression in Asia and the Pacific.

On June 13, Israel, in an unprecedented move, annihilated some of Iran’s major nuclear and military facilities, instantly killing its top military commanders, scientists, and diplomats, in a sophisticated military operation dubbed as the “Rising Lion.”

In response, its archfoe, Iran—one of the Middle East’s top military powerhouses—vowed not to let Israel walk away unscathed, immediately launching retaliatory attacks, and pounding the Zionist nation with a barrage of ballistic missiles.

On the other side of Asia, China continues to establish its thalassocracy in the West Philippine Sea, as it reinforces its military facilities in the region, muscling out smaller Southeast Asian nations.

Meanwhile, the West is witnessing the steady rise and rebirth of fascism, as far-right leaders continue to take the helm of top government posts—with the reelection of US President Donald Trump and the election of Friedrich Merz’s as the new German Chancellor.

Merz has vowed to establish Germany as the strongest military power in Europe. His political party, the Christian Democratic Union, and the right-wing populist AfD (Party Alternative für Deutschland), which hold the majority of the German parliament, house former Nazis, Nazi collaborators, and young-blooded Neo-Nazis.

As in previous world wars, territorial division and military expansion are but fruits of capitalist countries’ unending thirst for economic domination, which cannot be simply satiated with diplomacy and peaceful coexistence. If the trend holds, World War III might be nearer than we think.
