Mangahas, SWS: Beacon of integrity, bulwark of truth
At a time where truth far too often takes a backseat to perception, where the boundaries between fact and fiction are increasingly blurred, I write to express my profound gratitude for the work of Dr. Mahar K. Mangahas and Social Weather Stations (SWS), the organization he co-founded.
Mangahas upholds truth through accurate and reliable social research. Mangahas and SWS have persistently pursued excellence in the precise measurement and monitoring of social attitudes and perceptions. Their work has illuminated the constantly changing landscape of social attitudes, leading to invaluable insights for the development of government policies and corporate strategies.
Their work is critical amidst the proliferation of fake news and the dominance of algorithm-driven personal marketing.
Social research is a lucrative field and the lure of profit maximization and commercial manipulation is ever-present. We are fortunate that SWS has been steadfast as a nonprofit organization devoted to its noble purpose. Mangahas personifies the values of integrity and commitment that likewise define the SWS organization.
His regular Inquirer columns are thought-provoking and insightful on Philippine society. His research is a reliable barometer of societal trends.
With all this, Mangahas still finds time to support his university fraternity. He currently serves as chair of the board of trustees of the University of the Philippines Pan Xenia Fraternity Foundation, which testifies to his enduring commitment to mentor and inspire younger members as well as his tireless dedication to education and community.
As he celebrates his 80th birthday today, Jan. 23, his advocacy, influence, and wisdom continue to inspire younger generations. A beacon of integrity and bulwark of truth, we thank Mangahas and SWS, and wish you continued success.
Happy birthday, Dr. Mahar K. Mangahas!
