Marriage is not just a piece of paper

Avatar

Do you still believe in marriage? Yes, I do. I will tell you why.

My parents recently celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary on Jan. 2. Imagine that—40 years. Of course, I am happy and thankful that my parents have come this far amidst all the challenges they have faced in their married lives.

Growing up, I witnessed their testament of love and how they stayed true to their vows, sa hirap at ginhawa, for better or for worse, etc. It is also fair to say that there is really no such thing as a perfect marriage, nor are there perfect parents. Yes, there were times when they had to quarrel lightly or severely, but one thing is for sure: they would reconcile afterward. That is something I am lucky for about my parents—and that they seem to have a mature relationship, which I believe they developed through understanding, loyalty, and being God-fearing.

My parents remind me that marriage is not just a piece of paper, a mere requirement; it is a valuable covenant, a lifelong commitment, and requires the ability of two to withstand all the adversities marriage brings until death do them part.
