‘Must read’ editorial on impeachment
This is in reaction to your editorial titled “To impeach or not to impeach,” dated Dec. 10, 2024.
The piece is so rich with facts and background information on why impeachment complaints were filed against the sitting Vice President that I had to pause every now and then to digest its contents. And tried not to blink at the heady amounts of taxpayer money that evaporated in confidential thin air.
I think this particular editorial is a must-read for every Filipino, taxpayer or not, to have a clearer and evidence-based background on the hullabaloo caused by the second highest official of the land and former head of the Department of Education (DepEd). Sans emotions and political color, accountability for the alleged misappropriation of P612.5 million in confidential funds should be pursued relentlessly by the House of Representatives and the Senate.
Yes, it would definitely be crunch time for Congress to calendar the impeachment trial (should there be one). Yes, Congress will go on Christmas break in the next few days. But in my opinion, Christmas comes every year anyways. Meanwhile, an opportunity to seek justice for the multiple red flags that now find the VP sinking deeper in a quagmire of her own making does not come every year. Timing is EVERYTHING in this issue. It’s good that two groups have already filed impeachment complaints, and there are feelers a third complaint may be filed soon.
If memory serves, President Marcos quoted Thomas Jefferson’s “Evil triumphs when good men do nothing,” in his recent Sona. Well, Mr. President, it’s high time to make good on that powerful quote. To seek accountability for the betrayal of public trust is very important, and will make a difference to each (single) Filipino life.
We should “waste” time on it because not “wasting” time on it makes the House of Representatives and the Senate seem like “enablers of malfeasance.” ’Pag pinalampas pa natin ang pagkakataon na ito at hayaan lang natin ang status quo sa OVP, ay nakakahiya na po talaga tayo bilang bansa at bilang Pilipino.
Definitely, the pertinent government officials in this issue are not unstained. They can remedy that by fulfilling their duties and responsibilities as public servants who put the interest of the public FIRST. By then, they would be fulfilling the mandate bestowed on them by each and every Filipino citizen. The political storm that we are in due to the activities of the OVP and DepEd under the sitting VP is definitely not a “storm in a teacup.”
