Panglao Island, Bohol: A haven of natural beauty and adventure

Our country boasts a plethora of stunning destinations, and Panglao Island in Bohol province is unquestionably one of them. Our family’s annual outing brought us to discover recently the beauty of this island, an experience that will forever hold a special place in our hearts.
As we stepped foot on the island on our first day, we were instantly captivated by the breath-taking beauty of Alona Beach. The shore’s untouched charm was evident in its crystal-clear waters, which sparkled like a thousand diamonds in the sunlight. The soft, powdery white sand felt like silk beneath our feet, inviting us to linger and indulge in the serene atmosphere.
We spent the entire day basking in the warm sunshine and revelling in the peaceful ambiance of the island. The gentle lapping of the waves against the shore created a soothing melody that seemed to lull the world into a tranquil slumber. As we lounged on the beach in the evening, surrounded by an array of restaurants, bars, souvenir shops, and other amenities, we felt our worries and cares melting away. They were replaced by a deep sense of relaxation and contentment. The enchanting beauty of Alona Beach had truly cast its spell on us, and we knew that this was just the beginning of an unforgettable adventure.
One of the most memorable experiences of our trip was the dolphin-watching tour on our second day as we were en route to Balicasag Island. As we set sail into the open waters, our excitement grew with each passing moment. And then, suddenly, we saw them—a pod of majestic dolphins, swimming and playing in their natural habitat. Some of our children explored the underwater world thru snorkelling and they were amazed by the “pawikan” and the incredible array of marine life that thrived beneath the surface. The island-hopping excursions allowed us to discover the hidden wonders of Bohol’s marine ecosystem.
Our wonderful experience on the island was further enhanced by the exceptional services offered by the resorts and tour operators. The store and restaurant attendants and crew of boats were not only friendly and helpful but also spoke conversational English, making it easy for us, especially the foreign tourists, to communicate and navigate the island. From the moment we arrived, we felt welcome and at ease, thanks to the warm hospitality of the locals. The presence of tourist police patrolling the area in pairs was also a reassuring sight, and we felt safe and secure throughout our stay. Whether we were exploring the island’s hidden coves or simply relaxing at our resort, we knew that we were in good hands.
As we explored the island, we were constantly impressed by the locals’ eagerness to please and their genuine warmth. From the food servers who recommended the best local dishes to the souvenir shop attendants who helped us find unique mementos, everyone we met was friendly and accommodating. The local cuisine was another highlight of our trip, with its delicious meals and unique specialties. We indulged in fresh seafood and savoury Spanish rice dishes. And, of course, no trip to the island would be complete without trying the delectable local ice cream, which was a sweet and creamy treat that we will always remember.
While our experience in Bohol was largely positive, there is always room for improvement. Implementing uniforms for DOT-accredited tour guides would enhance professionalism and make it easier for tourists to identify them. Additionally, creating PWD-friendly pathways leading to Alona Beach would make the island more accessible to wheelchair-bound individuals. Installing tourism directional signs would also assist visitors in navigating their way around the island. Lastly, training trike drivers to provide information on local markets, restaurants, and unique stores would add another layer of convenience and cultural immersion for tourists. By implementing these suggestions, Bohol can further enhance the overall tourist experience.
To the people of Bohol, we extend our sincerest congratulations and admiration for your exceptional hospitality, stunning natural beauty, and commitment to providing an unforgettable experience for tourists. Your island is truly a gem, and we feel grateful to have had the opportunity to experience it.
