Talk of the Town: End mass promotion culture

Comment on “End mass promotion culture” (Undercurrent by Eleanor Pinugu, 7/15/24) via https://opinion.inquirer.net:
In the ’80s, there was no mass promotion in public schools, at least that’s what I had experienced. I had classmates in third- and fourth-year elective subjects who were repeaters and belonged to the “lower section,” which meant there were star sections where the brightest in the batch were grouped together. In the star sections, competition was palpable even though classmates were friendly to each other. And that’s what life really is, there’s a competition, whether conscious or unconscious, because not everyone is equal. Some just had to be left behind because they were not good enough. Secondly, please address teacher incompetence. Researches suggest that the single most important aspect of formal education is the teacher … and that implies that a teacher must be an authority in her field and has sincere love for teaching and young people.
