This myth was debunked years back. Philippines only became a massive plastic polluter due to imports from Western countries like Canada. The country did not produce all the waste.

Until such time that organic renewable alternatives or substitutes like cellulose (trees) and polysaccharides (seaweeds) are developed, plastic pollution can only be mitigated by reduction of usage and proper handling.
