It shows once again the country’s inept ability to punish erring officials who failed to follow moral decency or the law itself. Bato should have asked for leave without pay or resigned from his office if he is unable to perform. Or the authorities should have acted promptly knowing he wasn’t there to perform his job.

Just because there’s no rule about a senator’s absences doesn’t mean it’s okay. SP Sotto is fully aware that Dela Rosa is given millions of pesos to fulfill his duties as a legislator. Even if his office staff—mostly made up of his immediate family—are still “functioning,” that doesn’t excuse the Senator from his responsibility to attend senate sessions. SP Sotto should correct this lapse in rules regarding any senator’s absences.
