Talk of the Town: Slippery slope of social media regulation
Comment on “Slippery slope of social media regulation,” (Commentary, 9/27/24) via https://opinion.inquirer.net:
The Philippines is increasingly resembling China when it comes to controlling information and restricting individual freedoms. The proposed regulatory board for social media content is a clear reflection of this trend. While these measures may be intended to safeguard the public, they risk eroding free speech and empowering governments to decide what can and cannot be said. Instead of protecting individual freedoms and encouraging open discourse, such regulations could lead to further division and suppression, ultimately resembling the oppressive systems we once condemned. The Philippines, by leaning toward more control, is setting itself up for a more restricted and controlled society, where the voice of the ordinary citizen is stifled.
