While I half-agree with the article, I think a certain degree of envy is healthy, even normal. In fact, to Nietzsche envy is a virtue in the contrary sense that humility is, which he abhorred. It seems almost natural for people to be on par or better than those people above their socio-economic class. But of course, this pursuit must be along the lines of public norms and decency.

The phrase “keeping up with the Joneses” originates from a comic strip of the same name created by American cartoonist Arthur R. “Pop” Momand in 1913. The comic, which ran in newspapers until the 1940s, humorously depicted the social pressures of middle-class life, particularly the desire to match the lifestyles and possessions of one’s neighbors.
